Short description of the project
McDougalls supplies food retailers and wholesalers with prepacked flour with a minimum delivery time of 24 hours. Since the demand is erratic, it is not easy to plan production and manage stocks effectively. The objective of the project was to better match the production to demand in order to reduce costs and inventories. To meet the objective, World Class built an APS system (advanced planning and scheduling system) with ILOG Solver and Scheduler. Information on customer requirements, delivery deadlines and the plant's configuration is used to generate plans and schedules for production and delivery.
Soft Benefits
Valuable resources are released for maintenance. For operators the system is also useful: several planning and scheduling scenarios can be generated in just hours. Scenarios are based on real-time data and their implementation takes about 10 to 20 minutes. The system can also be easily upgraded while running.
Public quantitative benefits
Two-thirds cut in stocks and tripled stock turn rate.
